It tries hard but so long as you have the older OS you can wipe the HDD and 
re-install everything.

What printer(s)? I kept my old HP inkjet going for a few years beyond 
obsolescnce by installing slightly newer models of the same line. Worked for 
baic printing; dunno about scanning, it was a printer only.

External disk is probably the simplest.
