Looking carefully I found why. There's an entire retracting cap system inside 
the pen end, so that when the tip is retracted it's sealed in, like a regular 
sharpie with it's cap. This means that the whole retracting system has to move 
farther, pushing the cap out of the way, hence the absurdly long 'clicker' end.

There's a crapload of engineering that went into this pen.
