Also, spraying the vinegar around reminds me of an old Furniture Guy episode 
where they talk about a home-made equivalent of a Craftsman-era stain: get a 
plastic jar or butter tub, fill it with vinegar and dump in some steel wool, 
leave to marinate for a couple weeks. 

It reproduces the kind of ammonia-based staining the old school makers like 
Stickley used "...plus it makes your shop smell like a deli!"
