The key between Ctrl & Alt + the down arrow shrunk the window 
well, duh....

"If you hold down Alt you can move a window from any point in the window. And 
Alt+middle mouse button allows you to resize a window from any point inside the 
window." 

Dunno if this applies to KDE, Gnome or both...you don't mention which windowing 
system you're using.
