Patch ready

[Paul Sundling]

It was quite a bit more work than I initially anticipated, but I think I 
did the right thing to take Martin Cooper's suggestion to take option 2. 

So after all that hard work, anyone want to check it out and commit? :)  
This was a lot bigger than the @author patch.
