I think as much as we would like to think that new users trying out Struts will understand what the term "beta" means, I believe reality is that there will be a lot of negative impressions formed by having what's very likely to be the first webapp that newbies will try out fail on them. It gives the impression of lack of quality and attention to detail; imagine how you'd look at it: "Geez, if they can't even get their simple examples to work right, how can I have any faith that this is really viable technology, even after 1.1 is finally released".
I know everyone on the development team is anxious to have b2 out, and I understand it can be a little frustrating to have to wait until this is fixed. But in the grand scheme of things, waiting a few days until this problem is fixed and having a more polished system is well worth it. If this week weren't so bad for me timewise, I'd fix the blank webapp and try to tackle the broken tiles links; if it can wait until next week I can promise to produce these patches. Please consider very carefully the full ramifications of having Struts get a "black eye" from having glaring out of the box problems. It's been a while since b1 was released, I would imagine there will be a spate of reviews that talk about what's new in b2, and I can see each of them saying things like "while there are a lot of new features in b2, the fact that even their simplest example application doesn't work should give the intrepid developer pause to consider whether this technology is really ready for prime time..." blah blah blah. Folks -- you've worked too hard on this system to let it go out like this with a simple, repairable, relatively glaring problem like this. Steve > -----Original Message----- > From: Craig R.
