I disagree that it leads to hard to maintain code.  You would have the same 
code just in a different place.  I don't think struts should be burdened 
with supporting old containers when it's so easy to subclass the servlet.  
Alternatively, you could alter the struts ActionServlet code for your needs; 
I just don't think it should be part of the standard struts distribution.
