From what I understand, the "best practice" in contributing patches is 
to attach your patch file (preferably a diff -u as you have done) to the 
actual bug.  Doing this ensures that the patch is not lost or 
overlooked.  Unfortunately, a patch submitted to the list could be lost 
or overlooked.
