I'm glad you've been enjoying stxx so far. As for the struts 1.1 compatibility, the has not been a lot of movement in that area because as the main developer of this application, I've been involved in moving my wife and myself from Vancouver, BC, Canada to Prague in the Czech Republic for the last couple of month.
As for why it was implemented as a sub-app and not a plug-in. The reason is that the architecture of stxx works best as a sub-application, a plug-in would not be functionality compatible with stxx 1.0. In the meantime, if you have any issues or suggestions for the experimental stxx 1.1 version (which is feature complete), I'd like to hear them. Thanks, Jeff ps.
