Marantz VP-12S3 High Definition Projector

At the heart of any top home theater is the video monitor. Plasmas are reaching 63
inches in width but they can't compete with the physical awe that comes from a 120
inch 16:9 roll down screen beaming the best in HDTV.

Martantz's VP12S3 has the sex appeal of a projector costing $12,999. Tom Garcia puts
this single chip DLP through the paces with a battery of DVD and HDTV sources to see
how it competes with the best projectors in its class.

Revolution Home Theater Film Review
I, Robot Reviewed by Bill Warren
Rating: Three-and-a-Half Stars

This is not, repeat not, based on Isaac Asimov's collection of short stories of the
same title. The movie does use his famous "Three Laws of Robotics" and generally
treats them with respect; a couple of characters come from Asimov, too, notably Dr.
Susan Calvin, here played somewhat stiffly by Bridget Moynahan. Asimov fans needn't
fear that his ideas have been trashed. And the movie itself is reasonably entertaining
and spectacularly well produced.

The script was originally titled "Hardwired" and had nothing to do with Asimov. When
Alex Proyas, a long-time science fiction reader, was hired to direct, he had rewrites
done that incorporated Asimov's ideas. The story is credited to Jeff Vintar (who wrote
"Hardwired"); he also cowrote "Final Fantasy" and is adapting Asimov's "Foundation"
books to the screen. The co-writer of the final script is Akiva Goldsman, who's had an
erratic career: he wrote "A Beautiful Mind" but also "Batman Forever."

Men In Black

"Men in Black" is terrific entertainment, swift and sure of itself, never stepping
over the lines of straight-faced comedy into obvious farce. The premise is at once
familiar and fresh, the casting is on the money, it's directed in a light, breezy
style by Barry Sonnenfeld, and written with poker-faced seriousness by Ed Solomon.
Even though the ending doesn't have quite the intended punch, and though we are never
told very clearly just what's going on -- there's a good reason for that -- it's so
entertaining that few are likely to mind.

In an illuminating opening scene, we meet K (Tommy Lee Jones), a super-serious agent
of the Men in Black, a secret government organization set up to protect both the 1500
or so space aliens visiting Earth at any given them, and to hide their presence from
other human beings. The Men in Black provide an Immigration Service for aliens: they
run a kind of Ellis Island for visitors from out there at 504 Battery Drive in New
York. The Men in Black have all kinds of spiffy gadgets to help them with this, and K
is the best of all the agents

ID4: Independence Day

"Independence Day" is all the fireworks of the 4th of July in one
movie, as well as all of the patriotism, and all of the corn. Especially all of the
corn. The movie, about the invasion of Earth by very well-armed aliens, borrows
heavily from movies of the past, particularly "War of the Worlds" and "Earth vs. The
Flying Saucers," while adopting the disaster-movie format. And why not? Those too were
huge, cornball epics, stuffed to the gills with special effects; there wasn't a deep
thought in any of them, but audiences had a grand time with the best.

In true disaster-film format, director Roland Emmerich -- showing vast improvement
over "Stargate" -- and his co-writer Dean Devlin introduce the cast of characters
before getting down to what the audience came to see: aliens blowing the hell out of
Earth. First, the government, embodied mostly by President Whitmore (Bill Pullman),
learns that an enormous spacecraft has stopped near Earth. And has sent out a "almost
three dozen" smaller -- each a mere 15 miles across -- ships that descend toward
Earth, eventually taking up positions above the world's major cities.
