AVRev.com Lead Story

Microsoft and Intel Back HD-DVD

Microsoft and Intel are officially supporting the HD-DVD format. This adds to
the group that includes Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo and Memory-tech as members of the
HD-DVD Promotion Group. Bill Gates had previously expressed enthusiasm for the
format so the announcement comes as no surprise, continuing the Microsoft
versus Apple rivalry with each company backing a different format.

PCs running the new Windows operating system and featuring Intel's chip
technology in the near future are likely to feature support for HD-DVDs. Even
though there are no plans to build-in support for Blu-ray in PCs, Microsoft
acknowledges there is nothing stopping third parties from building PCs that do.

Microsoft and Intel's announcement is significant to the HD-DVD camp but it's
not a fatal blow to Blu-ray. In fact, the Sony-backed format has been racking
up more support than its rival lately, especially from content providers like
Twentieth Century Fox and Lions Gate Entertainment. Sony has another edge in
the Playstation 3 which will feature Blu-ray when it's released early next year.

AVRev.com Music Reviews

Paul Anka - Rock Swings
Is this a breakthrough album that will notch music history, change the way
people regard genres, take Paul Anka's career to another level, anoint him cool
at 63 and take him back to the top of the charts nearly half a century after he
first landed there?

Or is this a crass, uninformed, self-conscious gimmick that will fool no one
under the age of AARP and be shelved between Rhino's Golden Throats series and
Pat Boone's heavy metal album?

Is Paul Anka by day really legendary L.A. lounge lizard Richard Cheese? (They
both do Van Halen, Nirvana and Michael Jackson Vegas-style.)

The answer, unfortunately, is none of the above. Unfortunately, because the
album, and this review, would be more fun if it weren't.

Anka claims once the concept was proposed by some German investors, he scoured
the scores of hundreds of popular songs of the last three decades, guided by
what he had heard around the house from his five daughters (whose names all
begin with "A" don¹t you wonder about parents like that?), and came up with
200 candidates he then examined and played with and even scored (his way) and
performed with full orchestra, before choosing the 14 that comprise Rock
Swings. For what he's trying to do here there are some inspired choices, but
there are also enough misfits in whole or part that I question his song
selection.

Introducing the completely redesigned RBH MC Series Mark II
Designed for both audio and home theater enthusiasts, the MC Series features
RBH's proprietary aluminum cone technology; the same technology in their
flagship products. Because of the inherent stiffness, low mass and self-damping
properties found in aluminum, these advanced drivers deliver crisp, clear sound
with the immediacy and accuracy needed to deliver the realism of today's
high-definition music and movies.

Computer optimized crossover networks allow smooth integration between drivers
while increasing power handling and minimizing distortion.
