April 2006 A New York couple merged two adjacent apartments to create the ultimate high-tech home in Manhattan. David Mandl, a principal at Meltzer/Mandl Architects, designed the entire project. His wife Anita acted as project manager. (And they are still married!) The fully automated, 2,100-square-foot co-op apartment features 14 plasma television screens, a 15-foot retractable projection screen, nine built-in surround sound speakers, and 28 in-wall speakers. Lou Scheriff of Creative Control programmed and automated all the equipment. There are 16 components, including "his" and "hers" TiVos. The "smart" apartment also features electronic window shades for the 35 windows, which are programmed with timers to adjust to the sun. The entire system installation required 40,000 feet (7.5 miles) of cable with seven coaxial cables for each TV screen. Everything is controlled by Crestron and Lutron computers via a main touch screen wall panel in the foyer or by four handheld mobile devices with touch screen displays.
