chipset.
Prolific has even an utility to see which chipset has your cable.
Unfortunately your driver must be working to check the chipset :)
If the Aten cable uses a Prolific chipset internally, and uses the
standard Prolific USB VID/PID numbers (instead of custom ones), then
their driver will probably work for other cables too. Companies like
Aten, which sell usb-serial cables with Prolific chipsets inside, are
usually just re-packaging (with or without modifications) the stock
Prolific drivers. Prolific doesn't even sell usb-serial cables, only the
chips.
