I live in Barrow, Alaska where it gets to -40/-50 in the winter.
We have plenty of permafrost so sinking a post into it is the way to
go.  Summer thaw depth is on the order of 2 feet or less, then there
is permafrost for 2000-3000 feet.  Do you have permafrost there in
ME- (Maine?) If people here sink a metal pole it can get pushed back
up by the freeze-thaw cycle and lose alignment.  Wooden poles are the
way to go in permafrost conditions.

We go 12-18 feet and wrap a sheet of heavy plastic around the pole.
That keeps the pole from getting pushed up because it keeps the dirt
from sticking to the pole.
