Dear Krzysztof,
Over twenty-five years ago I mapped all the known scratch dials in England.
The concentration was round Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire .... the
area that was known as Wessex. Had these dials come from Europe then one
would have expected to see concentration around the various ports and harbours
but non were found. To me this suggested that the scratch dial probably begun
life in the Wessex area and spread outwards.

I have a fairly comprehensive bibliography on scratch dials on the net and if
you can add any new references then I would be most pleased to include them. I
am also writing a small site on these dials but have yet to finish it. See my
URL below.
Best wishes
Peter hamilton-leggett
