Hmm - this sounds remarkably like the commercial globes I saw a couple weeks ago at a warehouse discount chain here (Costco / Price Club)! They were maybe 10" diameter, and I remember them being reticulated in brass, but whether the lines were lat/lon or borders, I don't remember. Tagged at several hundred dollars, so I quickly passed by, but they were beautiful!
