Tony, Rube Goldberg was an American cartoonist of the 1930s, whose comic strips featured elaborate machines to accomplish simple goals. He studied engineering at the University of California at Berkeley (to please his father) before he responded to the higher calling of cartooning. When I attended Berkeley in 1958-60 many of his cartoons were exhibited in the Hearst Mining Engineering Building.
