I always thought - and I have had this supported by looking again at Chris Daniel's 'Shire Monograph' on sundials (p27) - that heliochronometer was a term applied to 'mean time ' dials that were used as a time reference. The Pilkington and Gibbs mechanical equinoctial design produced first in 1902 was one such. Patrick
