Dear Warren,

I was wondering if you have taught a unit on sundials. I am interested to
know if you are using Illinois State Standards for a guidline. I imagine
that the cross disciplinary approach you spoke of earlier would involve
Math, Physics....and History, perhaps. I would certainly be interested
helping you if Art and Social Studies could contribute.

I am currently working on a set of cross discipline lesson plans that
deal with the cultural pluralism of India, in particular the Muslim/Hindu
interface that occurs in Medieval or (Mughal) India. Literature, Art, and
Technology seem to be areas ripe for exploration. I have already worked
on Persian miniatures with my students examining the adoption of Hindu
aesthetic principles in traditional Islamic manuscript illustration.
Right now, I am looking at literature surrounding a Sufic saint reverred
both by Muslims and Hindus. I am also trying to familiarize myself with
sundials in order to develop a lesson plan surrounding the observatories
of Jaih Singh II. Sounds ambitious perhaps, but this is all long term
works in progress.

This year, I will probably purchase the *ready made* plans for a human
sundial that someone offerred, for my students, just to initially
familiarize myself with the total process and build off of it afterwards.

Peace,
Robert
