I have been in direct e-mail communication with John Carmichael for some
time about the intricacies of carving stone sundials. Due to the dust
created, John does his work outside - no problem if, like John, you live in
Arizona. Here in the UK, I have been hindered in my attempts to get started
for months by the bad weather.
This reminded me of the nice ditty by Michael Flanders and Donald Swan
which, though off topic, could be adopted as the anthem of the frustrated
British Sundial enthusiast:-

January brings the snow,
makes your feet and fingers glow.
February's ice and sleet
will freeze the toes right off your feet.
Welcome March with wintry wind
would'st thou were not so unkind (obligatory Shakespearian reference)
April brings the sweet spring showers,
on and on for hours and hours.
Farmers fear unkindly May,
frost by night and hail by day.
June just rains and never stops
for thirty days and spoils the crops.
In July the sun is hot.
Is it shining? No it's not!
August, cold and dank and wet
brings more rain than any yet.
Bleak September's mist and mud
is enough to freeze the blood.
Then October adds a gale,
wind and slush and rain and hail.
Dark November brings the fog,
shouldn't happen to a dog
Freezing wet December then.....
It's bloody January again!

I hope that's been some help for those of you who may be planning a holiday
over here.

Mike
