John and new list friends-

Thanks to all of you for the offers of help. Actually I have been in
contact with Fer. I downloaded his software earlier this week, and sent a
couple layout questions his way. He says I have the layout correct now.

I discussed the gnomon design with the man who is making it. The consensus
from those who responded to my query was that the shadow casting edges had
to point to the pole. I pointed this out to the maker, and he understood,
The style construction has changed from this tapered angle to a cylindrical
bar stock. I think it will be OK now.

I need to make sure we have a proper celestial north line on the pad. For
this dial, we'll probably use the magnetic north minus our magnetic
declination. We previously did transit passages to align the bolts in teh
telescope pier in the adjacent building. Got darn close, too!

As I mentioned to Fer in a private email earlier today, I am constantly
amazed by the wonderful people around the world who are willing to respond
to queries like mine. I see it all the time in other mail lists, etc.
Thanks so much!

I'll venture other questions when I have them.

Also, maybe I'll get sketches of the dial put on our club's website and
forward the link.

You are correct about mailing attachments to the list without permission.
In fact, the webmaster has programed the Sundial List to automatically
screen out messages that are too long. To avoid problems with the group, I
usually tell everyone that I will send them an attachment upon request.
Sorry about that. I should have told you.

I'll be happy to critique any drawings. You might also want to contact Fer
de Vires, one of the most knowledeable experts on the List. His e-mail
address is: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also, I will probably need to know your latitude and longitude.

Best

John
