David Young has kindly sent me a JPEG of a probable Victorian
'fayke' which closely resembles the 'dial' I queried earlier in ye daye.
The dial in David's picture is an equatorial dial with a strikingly
similar plate to the one I described as its base.The mass-production idea was an interesting red herring perhaps? Tony Moss.
