Dear linguisto-diallists,
Thank you for your kind responses.
As you can see from the table, the answer does not seem to be so clear-cut after all.

Bill Thayer           OTT-red                              Chicago, USA
John Davies       Oo-tred, Ow-tred               Flowton, UK
Ron Anthony      Ott-red  or Ot-tread           ?
Mike Cowham    (Out)-red, (Oot)-red           Cambridge, UK

If I were to jump to a conclusion from this admittedly still limited survey (a pet habit of scientists), I would say that the UK favours (Ou, Oo,Ow), whereas the USA inclines more to (Ott). Based on this hypothesis I would predict that Ron Anthony is located in the USA.   (;-))

The second conlusion is that I can pretty much choose my personal pronounciation (within the above framework).

Special thanks to John for the information about the typos, (I must admit, I did not read so attentively as to notice) and to Mike letting me know about the existence of an Oughtred Society.

Thanks again and apologies to the rest of the list for the digression.
