First of all: Sorry my awful english!
I found yesterday this mailing list and i've just subscribe it.
My name is Rui Farinha.
I'm 28 years old, i'm a Portuguese Biologist (teaching sciences in
school - pupils/students from 12-13 to 17-18). I live near Lisbon (latitude
about 39º N - i don't have a GPS)...
I love Astronomy and, in the present year i'm working at the Science Museum of Lisbon University, making workshops about Astronomy and Planetarium Sessions.
Well, one of the matters i love the most concerns to sundials.
But i'm just a beginner and i'm "kinda" lost guy.
I would love to know more about sundials:
- It's history
- Types / models
- Pictures and examples (and original ideas)
- The Math behind them
- The Astronomy behind them (sun path, equation of time, understand the different kinds of time...)
- The best sites in the internet; (including courses, on-line resources,
- Bibliography (the good and simple ones) - in Portugal foreign books are very expensive. The mail fares are very high!
- Considerations about the areas that a sundial can occupy, gnomon height,
- And, last but not least, very, very important: How to build accurate sundials to a given place at earth's surface?!
- All the rest and clues you can give and share with me - including free and shareware programs that i can download from some URL's.
I'm just starting. There is nothing like talk with people who have experience! We can only make them by trying, trying.... If we commit a mistake, we must think what happened... And someone with experience can give precious advice...
Hope someone can help me getting start...
Best regards
Rui Farinha
