I think attachments (less than 200K) are fine. The recipient can make the choice whether to download them or not. This is a useful way to share ideas.
When Tony Moss sends large files, he first invites (via this list) people who want them to reply personally, and then he sends them the files privately. This has worked well for me. Bill Gottesman
