I agree with Robert, and have a great deal of sympathy for those who have
to practically pay by the byte downloaded, and also understand the valid
concerns over viruses. What I would suggest is to switch to another, free,
virus-safe tool for reading mail, that gives you the option of previewing
the document(s), before downloading the whoe thing.
In my case, I use Pine, a Unix-derived text-based mail reader, available
for the PC. (If you're stuck with a Mac, Robert, I'm sorry; there's no
cure. :{) ) When I open my inbox, I see only an index of messages, with
From:, Subject:, Size:, and Date: fields. It's pretty clear which ones
contain large attachments, right away. Opening a message, I see the text
portion, with a further index of attachments, that *still* have not been
downloaded. I can then download, save, or view them individually...
