Many of you may be familiar with John Lamprey's work on translating Georg Hartmann's 15th century German text on astrolabes (and sundials).  John gave a talk at the NASS conference in Chicago several years ago, and his article on Hartmann's version of a moon dial appeared in the June 1999 issue of The Compendium.  John is evidently ready to publish his full translation as a hardbound book.  The following is a note from Jim Morrison to the Rete List, passed on by Mike Mickelson to me - and now to this list.

The members of the rete list may be interested in a particularly interesting book that is about to be published.  It is an English translation of three previously unpublished manuscripts by Georg Hartmann (1489-1564) of Nuremberg.  The manuscripts are handwritten in 15th century Low German and reside in the Austrian National Library and two other libraries.  John Lamprey has translated them from microfilm of the original and combined them into a single volume which he calls the 'Practika' (312 pp., hardbound).   The manuscripts cover the design of astrolabes and many kinds of sundials including diptychs, shephard's dials, chalice dials, cylindrical dials and declining dials as well as a horizontal stereographic instrument as they were made in the 16th century along with figures created from the source material.  I have an early copy and it is very nicely done.  I believe John is offering a prepublication discount to individuals.  You can contact the author at:
