Dear friends

This year we commemorate the 500th anniversary of Pedro Nunes the most
famous Portuguese mathematician.
He invented the nautical ring very similar to the shown sundial (from
EPACT pages, made by Humphrey Cole, British Museum collection),
http://www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/epact/catalogue.asp?sort=makerindexform&enumber=89914

but the scale instead to give the hour gives the Sun altitude.

Comandante Estácio dos Reis (a well know authority in Portugal for
ancient nautical instruments) is very much interested to know if in the
instrument collections of the world there is at least a nautical ring.

We would appreciate any assistance you may offer.
Thanking you in advance

António Lopes (Ph.D.)
