I had similar results with slate using a tool for cutting
tiles I found in the hardware store. It has two v-shaped tungsten
carbide cutters welded to either end of a 't' attached to a handle,
much like what I think Jack is describing. It cut the slate very
easily and, again as Jack describes, it was easy to make the cuts
deeper and wider on successive passes.
