I've just looked at the photo' Patrick directed us to where the effect I 
am talking about is *much* less marked than in the examples I saw at the 
Church of St Bartholemew on the cliff edge at Newbiggin in 
Northumberland.  As seen  in Patrick's pic' the effect might well have 
been through protection by paint as he suggests.   Unfortunately it was 
blowing a Northumbrian on-shore gale/sandstorm when I visited and 
photography wasn't an option for anyone who valued their camera lens.  
John Carmichael nearly froze to death just a few miles down the coast in 
early SUMMER after the BSS York Conference.!

While not unique there can't be many locations which such extremes of 
erosion by wind, sand and salt spray.  Some of the ancient tombstones 
have actually been worn right through at the base to leave a 'razor edge' 
stump.   

Local weather is likely to be at its worst for the next few days but as 
soon as it clears I promise some pics to illustrate my queries.
