It happens at the highest levels of precision. A grade 'A' Combination
Set (Rule/Square/Protractor/CentreSquare) by L.S. Starrett (now in my
possession) had its precision rule hand numerated after engine dividing
of the four metric scales. While taking students on a works visit I
watched similar been done in their Jedburgh factory. Three scales are
OK but the fourth is numbered 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 50, 70. Strange to
tell it went undetected for years in a busy workshop. The puzzlement,
frustration and 'scrap' produced as a result will never be known. The
Starrett rep' was most anxious to buy it back! No way!
