Hi John, Way to go! I had seen the dial before, but not the new and improved gnomon, which seems to work very well. Did you make the spiral-legged base piece yourself? Congratulations on a fine effort and a top-rate new sundial!
About the camera thing...I have a Nikon Coolpix 600 and have been using it for about 3-4 years or so. The best thing about it is that I don't have to fool around with tungsten bulbs and color filters any more when I do product photography. I totally agree with Tony in that you need a camera with an honest-to-goodness optical zoom...you will not be satisfied with anything else. My Nikon has a digital zoom mode that kicks in when I hit the end of the optical range, but it is disappointing and I rarely use it. All of the pictures of the Spectra sundial on my website were taken with that camera...and the dial is only 10" tall, requiring me to get pretty closeup. Considering the fact that some of the numerals and other details are very small, I think that the camera resolved things quite well. Best wishes, Jim Tallman -
