1930's, that was built in what was then a section of the city designed as residences for the French quasi-colonial administrators. The front wall still had a tile insert bearing the name somebody had once bestowed on it: "Le rayon vert". I never thought too hard about its meaiing but always interpreted it as as "the green stripe" -- a reference to the grounds which formed a narrow but long green garden between two streets. But seeing it as a move title, it sounds like "le rayon vert" is a reference to something else -- probably a literary reference. Can any francophone readers here identify meaning of the "rayon vert" beyond its literal meaning of green stripe, ray or flash?

Can't remember this discussion... probably some *long* time ago?

Just for the sake of information, there was (a few years ago!) a nice
movie by Eric Rohmer called 'Le rayon vert' (the green flash). Nearly
nothing to do with astronomy, except that the characters attend many
sunsets in the hope of seeing the green flash, and in the end, they see
one. That's the time to make a wish!

Cheers,
Thierry
