        Dear Mario,
In reply to your enquiry about letters on medieval dials:-
I have only been able to find two dials (out of over 3000) where
possible letters occur.
  1. All Saints, Salperton, Gloucestershire, England
At the bottom of the dial is n - n in the noon position. I have said
it may stand for 'noon' but of course it could be 'Nones' (about 3 p.m.)
from which noon is derived anyway.
    2. St James, Idlicote, Warwickshire, England
An 'ornamented' full circle dial, at the bottom there is possibly
an N, in the noon position.
Also, in the upper half (above the horizontal by about 20°, left
side, is a letter T. Obviously this cannot relate to any shadow indication.
Although numbers round the edge occur occasionally they are not
common. Another 'marker' rather more common is the quincunx (five on dice),
again occuring at noon and morning/afternoon sevices. (with variations to 3
or 4 dots and also to the 6 a.m./p.m. line)
If you would like photographs of the above dials, please let me know
and I can post them to you.
       All best wishes,
           Tony Wood
