When I was in Beijing a few years ago, I saw many similar devices for
sale for a nominal price. The Guguanxiangtai (ancient observatory) has a
little shop where they were sold, and also in Liulichang Market shops.
They were treated to appear aged, but obviously were not, and the
quality was uniformly mediocre. 

I didn't buy one because they were sold with other cheap tourist trinket
items, but in hindsight should have picked one up as a curiosity. I
haven't researched how they work (if at all), and whether they are based
on a working design.
