Hi Ian,

As the local host for the NASS conference to be held in Banff in August
2003, I thought I should respond to your weather trivia comment. The west
coast of Canada including Vancouver has a wet coastal marine climate,
similar to Manchester. Your comment may apply there but not here, 600 km
east. The mountains between Vancouver and Banff wring the moisture out of
the weather systems. By the time the storms get to Banff, the air mass is
warm and dry. At this time of year the precipitation falls as snow on the
mountain ski resorts. The major ski resort on the continental divide in
Banff National Park is appropriately named "Sunshine Village". East of the
Rocky Mountains near Calgary there is no snow on the ground. We are
experiencing a prolonged drought. I anticipate fine weather here August
21-24, 2003.

This is yours to enjoy. There is a charter airline www.HMYairways.com with
weekly service between Manchester and Calgary currently advertising return
air fares specials as low as for $299 Canadian (~120 British Pounds. This
puts you on a par with Vancouver residents as it costs that much for a
regular economy fare Vancouver/Calgary return. Come on over. The weather is
fine for sundials.

Cheers,

Anyway there are far rainier spots than Manchester - I seem to remember
passing through some place in Canada not a million miles from next
year's NASS where it boasted(?) that it "rains three days out of every
two"
