Hello Claude!

Since I am a lover of books, I have tried to gather, or at least to know,
all the books on Sundials that are available currently in Italian (my
language), in English, in French and in Spanish.

Among them those that deal the study of the sundials not using mathematics
as secondary technique, are very little (I know only 5) : I list them below
with some personal notes.

In English

Harold E. Brandmaier - SUNDIAL DESIGN

in photocopies - April 2003 - $25 - p. 160 - UNIA4 - 118 graphs and sketches
in the text - any photo

The only text present in the english literature (to my knowledge) that
broaches the study of the sundials from a theoretical-mathematical point of
view and the only one that uses the matrix calculation.

The volume requires a preventive knowledge of the solar clocks and of their
construction.

The text is very clear, synthetic, well explained and full of annotations
and idea.

In Italian

- Fantoni Girolamo

Orologi Solari - Trattato completo di gnomonica

Rome 1988 - p. 550 UNI 4 - Bound - About 66 Euro

In my opinion the best theoretical book currently in commerce in the world.

It deals of almost all the types of solar clocks (ancient and modern)

Enough technical. Complete. A lot of sketches and photos

- Ferrari Gianni - Relazioni e formule per lo studio delle meridiane piane

1998 - p. 250 UNIA4 - 42 Euro + shipping - published in photocopies

Mathematical study of plane sundials -Very technical. It contains some
arguments not dealt in any available text currently in the world - more than
200 sketches and original graphs

(my book : -) )

In Spanish

- Gaya, Rafael Soler - Diseno y construccion de Relojes de Sol - Metodos
graficos y analiticos

Mayorca - 1997 - p. 450 UNIA5 bound

Colegio de Ingenieros de caminos, canales y puertos - Carrer Convent de Sant
Francese 10-1er - 07001 Ciutats de Mallorca - Spain

One of the best theoretical texts currently in commerce in the world. Enough
technical. Complete. A lot of sketches, graphics, photos in b/w and in
colours, mottoes.

In French

-Savoie Denis - La gnomonique

Le Belleses Lettres - Paris - 2001 - p. 450 bound

Very technical and complete. It contains arguments - as the quadrants in
stereographic projection - that are not currently treated in any other
available text - Numerous sketches and original graphs.

One of my preferred books is Rene Rohr - Sundials - Dover

even if the Italian edition (now out of print) it is more wide and with more
arguments.

In any case, in my opinion, the books reminded are not suitable for those
who begin the study of the sundials, as the Waugh and of the Mayalls are,
and they can be read with profit only after a good personal knowledge of the
matter.

A dear regard

Gianni Ferrari
