Hi Michael,

There are a number of free references on the "North American
Sundial Society" pages ( sundials.org ). In fact many of their
publications, especially the repository have tons of great ideas and
background information. Other sundial societies around the world
also have much to offer.

A universal ring dial is basically an equatorial dial mounted in an
latitude ring with a declination slider on the gnomon. I've some
references to construction that I'll look up for you. I'm away from my
references at the moment.

I've been involved in the SCA off and on for a number of years and
have designed a few easy to manufacture corrected sundials for
specific event times and places. There are a huge number of
designs that can be used for this purpose. Floating designs, designs
with levels, hanging designs, designs with compass, sight on a
mountain peak and read shadow, etc. It is kind of fun to design
something that looks different, yet works well.

Hello,

As the subject says, I am looking for any information of the making of
universal ring dials. So far I've only been able to find links to buying
them or seeing collections of them. I would prefer any free sources, but
books would be welcome suggestions as well (especially with ISBN) I
participate in some renaissance festivals and instead of having afew of them
configured for the different areas it would be nice to have a single 'pocket
watch' that can be used anywhere.

Also, is there a way to create a 'normal' sundail that is specific for a
location and time frame? Such as the month of may in chicago, taking into
account the equation of time?

Thank you,
Michael Alexander
