Hello again,

To date, I've received 23 replies to my plea for advice on buying a digital camera. The comments were interesting and useful. Thanks for the help. As best as I can remember, no camera model was recommended more than once, leaving me with quite a range of possibilities to select from.

I've tried to respond to those who wrote directly to me. (If anyone has been left out, forgive me.) For all others who might wonder at how this matter was resolved, I send this brief message:

I've ordered a Nikon CoolPix 8700, it part because it was offered at a hard-to-refuse price -- $545 (US). The camera has 8 MP and 8x zoom.

Thanks for your patience,

Hello all,

This is perhaps a bit off topic, so forgive me.

I've been using a Kodak 4330 digital camera which has 3.1 mega pixels and a 3x optical zoom. I want to move on to a better digital camera, one which will allow me to take sundial pictures with excellent detail, even though I may not be able to get close to the dial. (Macro and normal capabilities are also important.)

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a camera which doesn't cost more than $500 - $600 (US)? Cheaper would be good. Please mention specific models.

I'm especially interested in opinions about whether it's better to go for maximum pixels (say 6 MP or more), or to look for a camera with large optical zoom (say 10x or 12x). The cameras with both seem to be very expensive.

Thanks for any advice.
