Title: Stained Glass Sundial Gnomon Mounting
Hello Fritz:

Nice Drawing!  Yes, your idea will work well, but only with certain design patterns where the center of the dial (where the hourlines meet, not the geographical center of the panel) is located near the top frame.  If the hourlines converge in the center of the window, then the vertical support bracket would be very long and would obscure much of the artwork of the window.  I thought about using this technique with my Gecko Dial, but I had to reject it because tghe support stay would have obscured the hand-painted Sunface at the dial's center.  But for other designs, it is a good idea!

In fact, this gnomon attachment technique has already been used in several dials.  The Marlborough Dial comes to mind. BSS dialists David Brown & Peter Walker recently installed an improvised replacement 4mm stainless steel rod gnomon painted with green enamel. It's attached to a vertical support stay that's screwed to the building's wood molding above the dial. Small screws at the top of the stay helped the installer to properly adjust the gnomon's position.  (see photo attached).

Thanks!

John

Hi John and all,

I would think that making a solid metal frame for Stained Glass Sundials would be the best method for securely fastening the gnomon and for protecting the Stained Glass pieces.

Here I’ve shown a frame made for a 24 X 36 inch opening window.  It is made from ½ X 1” rectangular steel tube and contains a flat pattern shape of 1/8 thick steel sheet to support the gnomon.  I’ve shown a gnomon made from 1” diameter round.  Once welded, it is completely sealed or seamless and perfect for powder coating (painting).  The shape of the sheet support can be created so as to integrate into the design of the sundial.

Then stained glass sundial can then be mounted inside the ½ inch thick frame for

good support.

What do you think of this idea John?
