On the subject of astrolabes, I notice that the wonderful Museum of the History of Science in Oxford has a special exhibition on astrolabes at the moment. See http://www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/ . This includes talks at 2:30 every Sunday on a particular astrolabe in the collection, which is the best in the world. Also, on Saturday 10 December they have a sundial-making workshop for children.
