Might it be a meridian which is crossed by a spot of sunlight at noon
Greenwich local apparent time? The position of the spot on the bar and the
size of the spot all provide valuable information in addition to the
confirmation of the exact time of noon.

I recently received a photo of some type of dial or, possibly,
noon-indicator, taken in El Escorial, a monastery outside Madrid. It seems
to
show a long (several meters, at least) metal bar, perhaps 10 cm wide, set in

the floor of the building. The photo does not show enough detail to tell if
there are any kind of graduations on the bar. No type of shadow appeared in
the picture.
My sister, who took the picture, was on a guided tour at the time and
did
not have time to look closely. The guide characterized it as a "Greenwich
time
indicator."
I'd be very interested in any information anyone would have about this.
