Dear friends,
The SOCIETAT CATALANA DE GNOMONICA (Catalan Society of
Gnomonics) has started a campaign to attract new members for
its society. This year it is dedicated to foreign friends who
are especially interested in obtaining the Octolingual
Gnomonics Vocabulary that it publishes as a suplement of its
bulletin LA BUSCA DE PAPER (The Gnomon of Paper).
Each issue includes 12 pages of this vocabulary besides 12 or
16 pages of scientific articles. (In Catalan and in Spanish).
This trimestral bulletin is free for the members of the
society. The cost of 1997 subscription for foreign members is:
- European members outside Catalonia
5.600 + VAT = 6.496 pesetas
- Other members outside Catalonia
6.200 + VAT = 7.192 pesetas
The members incorporated in 1997, as a reward for their
subscription, will receive the issues of 1996 FREE. I think
this offer is interesting for our friends of the sundial list.
The address for subscriptions is:
SOCIETAT CATALANA DE GNOMONICA
Atenes 3,
08006 - BARCELONA (Spain)
or my e-mail address.
I annex the prologue of this vocabulary and, as a sample, the
text of one of its pages. (The real presentation is different,
of course. But the text is the same).
Regards.

A GNOMONIC VOCABULARY
A BRIEF PROLOGUE...
In this issue of LA BUSCA DE PAPER (The Gnomon of Paper) we
begin the publication of a Gnomonic Vocabulary (perhaps we
should say a mini-vocabulary) containing what I consider to be
the fundamental words from the science of Gnomonics for the
translation of the foreign texts we receive.
Obviously, such a task cannot be improvised or performed
overnight. The process began with my jotting down a few words
which, when I came across them in foreign languages, caused me
problems, or which could have two meanings and which I wanted
to clarify properly. And the list grew longer with terms I
thought it might be interesting to gather together in the same
collection.
I have limited myself to the languages with which we most
often work with, thinking especially of what would be useful
to all the enthusiasts in the organizations from that send us
publications and to whom we send ours.
For this reason our vocabulary has been drawn up in Catalan,
English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and
Spanish, and contains the equivalents of each word or
expression in the other seven languages, ordered
alphabetically in every entry in the same way as they are
under the different "letters" which will appear successively.
The preparation of this vocabulary has been a difficult task
to which I have had to devote a great deal of effort and, more
than anything, time, of which I do not have a great deal to
spare.
If our vocabulary is useful for enthusiasts speaking the
languages in which it has been drawn up, our efforts will not
have been in vain.
The task completed, perhaps it only remains for us to place on
it, as on a sundial, its motto. I would wish this to be:
"The hours will pass, but I will remain."
... AN INEVITABLE PRICE...
Evidently, there will be errors in this work, which will all
be my own inexorable fault. Some from lack of attention,
others from insufficient knowledge, and the rest from typing
errors.
I have created and employed special programs and have gone
over the originals many times, but, since I have had to deal
with so many different languages, the computer that is my
brain will not always have functioned as well as I would have
liked.
I would ask the reader to inform me of the errors he finds, or
points on which he is not in agreement. But I also ask him to
be indulgent with the adjectives he uses if everything has not
come out as he would have wished. Many thanks in advance.
... AND MY SINCERE RECOGNITION
In drawing up this Vocabulary, I have received the inestimable
assistance of the association "De Zonnewijzerkring" (The
Sundial Ring) of the Netherlands. They translated the Dutch
terms from the English list. The senior engineer Herbert Rau
of Berlin did the German translation, also from the English
list; and the "Grupo de Amigos de Rel¢gios de Sol" (Group of
Friends of the Sundials) of Lisbon prepared the Portuguese
terms from the Spanish list.
Without their valuable help it would not have been possible to
complete this vocabulary.
I wish to extend to all of them my recognition of their
magnificent work and to inform the readers that they were
always ready to help, replying punctually and rapidly to my
letters and revising and re-revising the lists that I sent so
many times.
Sincerely and once more, many thanks.
Josep Maria Vallhonrat
