Two books come to mind: "Mathematics a Human Endeavour" (author forgotten)
Pub Wilson Co., and distributed about twenty years ago by Scientific
American magazine, and "The Ascent of Mathematics", Coughlin and Zitarelli,
McGraw Hill, 1984 ISBN 0-07-013215-1
Surely you can find one of these locally. As a 36-year mathematics teacher,
they were daily sources.
