Hi Mike,

Good idea such a buyer's guide but how many items should be mentioned?.

Because you point to a sundial with a wide gnomon I suggest to add at least a number 6 item.
Are the hourlines meeting with the correct footpoint of the gnomon.

I have seen very beautiful sundials with the early and late hours shifted in the wrong direction.

See our website :

Other items to think about are:.

Is it a correct pattern?.
A possible test is written at:

month  05-11

If the pattern is correct still you don't know for what latitude it is.
The gnomon could be for a different latitude.

For most dials in a garden centre these tests are some overdone I think but not for a more expensive one.

Best wishes, Fer.

Subject: Buyer's Guide

Fellow enthusiasts,

I get really annoyed about the sundials that I see on sale in garden centres here in the UK.
The people who make them seem to have no conception about how they work.
As they are invariably horizontal dials, I thought I would put a "Buyer's Guide" to such dials on my web site.
I think there are 5 golden rules - have I missed any?

Check it out - follow the link from my home page.
Helpful comments welcomed.
