Some years ago I put a NASS sundial FAQ online. This included a page called "Check your dial, and align it to True North" which included most of the criteria Mike covered with the exception of "are both sides of the gnomon straight" - (Geez, I hope I never see a spiral one).

The NASS FAQ also included :

-------------------------------------------
4. If you want to test further . . .

Measure the style height - the vertical angle the gnomon makes with the dial face.

Measure the angle on the dial face between the sub-style and the 3:00 or 9:00 hourline. (These two angles should be the same.)

The sine of the style height should equal the tangent of the 3:00 hourline.

This trick can also be used to determine the style height, and hence the original latitude, for a dial that is missing its gnomon.
------------------------------------------

I would appreciate any suggestions for improving the NASS FAQ.

Subject: Buyer's Guide

Fellow enthusiasts,

I get really annoyed about the sundials that I see on sale in garden centres here in the UK.
The people who make them seem to have no conception about how they work.
As they are invariably horizontal dials, I thought I would put a "Buyer's Guide" to such dials on my web site.
I think there are 5 golden rules - have I missed any?

Check it out - follow the link from my home page.
Helpful comments welcomed.
