Hi John,
  I'm on the road, far from references, but  it occurred to me that your 'dial'
could be a 'Mac Oglesby'-type suspended bar dial (I'm not sure if it has a
proper name!) if the shadow is cast by a polar gnomon.  Perhaps Mac can set me
right on this.
