Hi Peter:

I don't think this is a polar axis gnomon because it looks like it hangs
horizontally, and we know it is not located at the Equator.

I can't speak for Mac, but you might be refering to the "planar" dials that
Mac wrote about in the Compendium, where he used horizontal blocks for each
hour. It might be that, but most likely it's not I think.

My best guess it still that the pointed tip might function as a nodus that
casts a colorful pointed shadow on the ground or on a wall.

It would be great if a dialist who lives near there could sweet-talk their
way into get permission to see it, since the building is closed to the
public. We need to find out if there are any traditional sundial face
markings on the ground or walls.

I did find out from a glass artist the name of the artist who made it. His
name is Larry Kirkland from Seattle. I'm going to try to locate him to ask
him about it. I'll let you know if I find out anything.

Thanks for writing,

John

Hi John,
I'm on the road, far from references, but it occurred to me that your
'dial'
could be a 'Mac Oglesby'-type suspended bar dial (I'm not sure if it has a
proper name!) if the shadow is cast by a polar gnomon. Perhaps Mac can set
me
right on this.

best wishes,

Peter Mayer
