Greetings fellow dialists,
I am a bit closer to understanding the laying out of Italian hours,
thanks to correspondents. Jan Safar wants to instruct me in a method
using an oblique gnomonic projection. Although I can just about cope
with astrolabes and Weir's azimuth diagram I think I would rather not -
no offence intended, Jan. Gianni Ferrari's method looks useful and he
also directed me to Mac Oglesby's paper which seems to be following the
method I thought of using points on the solsticial curves. I do not have
a computer drawing programme but can easily find altitudes and azimuths
(and declinations and EoT) on my pocket calculator (I must get into the
twenty-first century before it is too late). Frank King's proposals need
more of my attention. But at least I am more comfortable now, thanks to all.

Italian and Babylonian hours really are attractively different from the
usual layouts. I hope we are to hear more of them.
