I drew several sundials with conic gnomon or sphere inscribed in a cone, to show italian and babilonian hours of different places. For example, the picture shows a sundial for 12 european cities. Every cone has a different vertex angle, depending on the latitude of the city, and casts a shadow on the base of the next cone. The dials are equinoctial, so they have hour lines every 15° and every cone may be turned around the polar axis for the difference of latitude between the place where the ear is placed and the longitude of the city. On the two ears, one for the summer and the other for the winter, one can read the italian and the babilonian hours of the 12 cities. The draw is only a suggestion how the cones and italian hours may be realized, I know it is a joke and that these flowers grow only in my pc (so there are insects too), but if someone wants to make it, I think there are some practical solutions.

Hour and prayer lines are fine. Is there other information, that uses
Italian hour calculations (or solar declinations) , that would be of
interest to a broad audience? Fred Sawyer created a universal dial of
modern hours based on a world map. Is it possible to create a "map" dial
that would show where the sun is setting at that moment? What could it
look like? Would it require a line shadow casting instead of a point?
Any thoughts?

Thank you -- Warren Thom
